All-Time Leagues and Teams
Here is the list of the Leagues and competing Teams since the inception of organised football in New South Wales in 1984.
Red Text signifies Teams that are active in Gridiron NSW.
A.A.F.C. – Australian American Football Conference (1984)
Inaugural organised League in New South Wales, formed for the 1984 season.
Included seven teams – Canterbury Cougars, Double Bay Buccaneers, Hycraft Argonauts, Northshore Redbacks, Parramatta Saxons, Sydney University Stormtroopers, and Waverley Raiders. The most notable fact about the League was that it was full-contact football played without gear!
First Championship Game was played at Lidcombe Oval on October 21, 1984. The undefeated Canterbury Cougars beat the Sydney University Stormtroopers to win the first title.
Argonauts – Hycraft, Fairfield, L.U.S.C. , Parramatta (1984 – 1997)
One of the foundation teams. Known as Fairfield Argonauts from 1985 until 1993 when they joined forces with Lansvale United Sports Club. Played in Premier State Gridiron League (P.S.G.L.) from 1993 until 1996. Rejoined the N.S.W.G.F.L. as part of a merger with Parramatta Bears in 1997. Folded at the end of 1997 season.
Army – (1988)
Formed by members of the Australian Army and included some ex-players from St. George Pacific Fireballs. The team competed in the 1988 season but were forced to fold prior to the 1989 season due to major military activities. Some Army players went on to form Southern Warriors.
Astros – A.C.T. (1995 – 2000)
Formed by ex-players from Canberra Sabretooths. Returned to A.C.T. League in 2001.
Barbarians – Sydney City (1998 – 1999)
Joined the N.S.W.G.F.L. in 1998. Folded at the end of 1999 season.
Bears – Parramatta (1996)
Re-named Northwestern Rebels team played in N.S.W.G.F.L. in 1996. Merged with L.U.S.C. Argonauts to form Parramatta Argonauts for 1997 season. Folded at the end of 1997 season.
Buccaneers – Double Bay, Eastern Suburbs (1984 – 1988)
One of the foundation teams. Originally called Double Bay Buccaneers. Known as Eastern Suburbs Buccaneers from 1985 until 1988. Folded at the end of 1988 season.
Cobras – Newcastle (1988 – 1997, Current)
Joined N.S.W.G.F.L. in 1988. Played in Premier State Gridiron League (P.S.G.L.) in 1993. Rejoined N.S.W.G.F.L. for 1994 season. Folded during 1997 season. Reformed and were admitted to Gridiron NSW as a member Club in 2012.
Cougars – Canterbury, Canterbury-Bankstown, West Sydney (1984 – 1987)
One of the foundation teams and inaugural New South Wales Champions. Known as Canterbury Cougars in 1984. Changed name to Canterbury-Bankstown Cougars for 1985 and 1986. Known as West Sydney Cougars in 1987. Folded during 1987 season.
Cougars – Central Coast (1994 – 1995)
Formed by Central Coast based players from Cobras. Joined N.S.W.G.F.L. in 1994. Folded at the end of 1995 season. No known links to Canterbury Cougars.
Cowboys – (1985)
One of the demonstration teams formed in 1985 that toured N.S.W. Not affiliated with any League. Played five games against the Thunderbolts in Campbelltown, Wagga Wagga, Tamworth and the A.C.T. Folded at the end of the demonstration tour.
Eagles – Hills District (1986 – 1989)
Joined N.S.W.G.F.L. in 1986. Folded at the end of 1989 season. Some Eagles players went on to form Ryde Spartans.
Fireballs – St. George Pacific (1986 – 1987)
Formed by ex-players from Canterbury (West Sydney) Cougars. Folded during 1987 season.
Gridiron N.S.W. – (2007 – Current)
Arguably the longest tenured League in Australia. Took over from A.A.F.C. in 1985. Survived the threat of a breakaway League (P.S.G.L.) between 1993 and 1996. All NSW Clubs reformed under the N.S.W.G.F.L. banner in 1997.
Renamed Gridiron N.S.W. in 2007 to align with National body, Gridiron Australia.
Jaguars – Concord (2000 – 2002)
Formed by ex-players from Sydney City Barbarians. Folded at the end of 2002 season.
Jets – Mascot, South East Sydney (1992 – 1994)
Joined N.S.W.G.F.L. in 1992 known as Mascot Jets. Joined Premier State Gridiron League (P.S.G.L.) for 1993 and 1994 seasons. Changed named to South East Sydney Jets in 1994. Folded at the end of 1994 season. A number of Jets players moved on to U.T.S.
Lions – Sydney University (1984 – Current)
One of the foundation teams. Originally known as Sydney University Stormtroopers. Known as Sydney University Lions from 1985. One of the longest tenured Clubs in New South Wales Gridiron (along with the Raiders).
Mustangs – Wollongong TAFE, Wollongong College (1992 – 2008, Current)
Joined N.S.W.G.F.L. in 1992. Joined Premier State Gridiron League (P.S.G.L.) in 1993. Rejoined N.S.W.G.F.L. in 1997. Sat out the 2009 season. Rejoined the League for the 2010 season.
N.S.W.G.F.L. – New South Wales Gridiron Football League (1985 – 2006)

Outlaws – Penrith City, U.W.S. Nepean, U.W.S. (1995 – 2011)
Formed by ex-players from L.U.S.C. Argonauts. Joined Premier State Gridiron League (P.S.G.L.) in 1995. Originally known as Penrith City Outlaws. Joined N.S.W.G.F.L. in 1997. Known as U.W.S. Nepean Outlaws from 1999. Changed name to U.W.S. Outlaws in 2004. Reverted to Penrith City Outlaws in 2006. Sat out the 2012 season.
Pioneers – Parramatta (1985)
Formerly known as Parramatta Saxons. Changed name to Parramatta Pioneers for 1985 season. Withdrew from N.S.W.G.F.L. during 1985 season. Changed name to Thunderbolts and played demonstration games against Cowboys in 1985.
Pirates – Liverpool, West Sydney (1986 – Current)
Formed by ex-players from Fairfield Argonauts. Joined N.S.W.G.F.L. in 1986. Joined Premier State Gridiron League (P.S.G.L.) in 1993. Known as West Sydney Pirates from 1994. Rejoined N.S.W.G.F.L. in 1996.
Predators – North Western (2005 – Current)
Joined N.S.W.G.F.L. in 2005. No links to former Northwestern Rebels team.
P.S.G.L. – Premier State Gridiron League (1993 – 1996)
Breakaway League formed in 1993 included six teams – Bondi Raiders, Liverpool Pirates, L.U.S.C. Argonauts, Mascot Jets, Newcastle Cobras, Wollongong Mustangs.
Newcastle Cobras returned to N.S.W.G.F.L. in 1994 leaving five teams in P.S.G.L.
South East Sydney Jets folded at the end of 1994. Replaced by Penrith City Outlaws to retain five teams in P.S.G.L.
West Sydney Pirates returned to N.S.W.G.F.L. in 1996 leaving four teams in P.S.G.L. Three teams from A.C.T. League join P.S.G.L. for one season – Canberra Tigers, Queanbeyan Wolverines, and Tuggeranong Tornadoes.
P.S.G.L. and N.S.W.G.F.L. teams rejoined for a unified competition in 1997.
Raiders – Waverley, Bondi (1984 – Current)
One of the foundation teams. Originally known as Waverley Raiders. Known as Bondi Raiders from 1985. Joined Premier State Gridiron League (P.S.G.L.) in 1993. Returned to N.S.W.G.F.L. in 1997. One of the longest tenured Clubs in New South Wales Gridiron (along with the Lions).
Rams – Macarthur (1994 – 1995)
Joined N.S.W.G.F.L. for 1994 season. Folded at the end of 1995 season. Some players went on to form U.W.S. Macarthur team.
Rebels – Northwestern (1985 – 1995)
Joined N.S.W.G.F.L. for 1985 season. Changed name to Parramatta Bears for 1996 season. Merged with L.U.S.C. Argonauts to form Parramatta Argonauts for 1997 season. Folded at the end of 1997 season.
Redbacks – Northshore, Manly-Warringah, Northern (1984 – 1986, 1988 – 1995, 1997 – 2001)
One of the foundation teams. Originally known as Northshore Redbacks. Sat out the 1987 season. Known as Manly-Warringah Redbacks from 1989. Sat out the 1996 season. Known as Northern Redbacks in 2001. Folded at the end of 2001 season.
Sabretooths – Canberra (1991 – 1994)
Joined N.S.W.G.F.L. in 1991. Folded at the end of 1994 season. Some Sabretooths players went on to form A.C.T. Astros.
Saxons – Parramatta (1984)
One of the foundation teams. Changed name to Parramatta Pioneers for 1985 season. Withdrew from N.S.W.G.F.L. during 1985 season. Changed name to Thunderbolts and played demonstration games against Cowboys in 1985.
Seahawks – Cronulla Sutherland, Sutherland (1987 – Current)
Joined N.S.W.G.F.L. in 1987. Originally known as Cronulla Sutherland Seahawks. Known as Sutherland Seahawks from 1988. Fielded two teams in 1993 N.S.W.G.F.L. competition. Second team known as Ghosts. Reverted to one team in N.S.W.G.F.L. from 1994.
Sharks – Central Coast (2010 – Current)
Joined Gridiron NSW for the 2010 Colts season and entered a team in the Division 1 competition for the first time in 2010. No known links to Central Coast Cougars.
Spartans – Ryde (1990 – 1991)
Formed by ex-players from Hills District Eagles. Joined N.S.W.G.F.L. in 1990. Folded at the end of 1991 season.
Thunder – Newcastle University (2000 – 2001)
Joined N.S.W.G.F.L. in 2000. Folded at the end of 2001 season.
Thunderbolts – (1985)
One of the demonstration teams formed in 1985 that toured NSW. Not affiliated with any League. Played five games against the Cowboys in Campbelltown, Wagga Wagga, Tamworth and the A.C.T. Folded at the end of the demonstration tour.
U.T.S. – (1994 – Current)
Joined N.S.W.G.F.L. in 1994 as U.T.S. Gridiron and adopted the name U.T.S. Grey Lizards. Changed nickname to U.T.S. Eagles in 1995. Reverted to formal name of U.T.S. Gridiron in 2001. Loosely know as the Gators which is a name not recognised or actively promoted by the University.
U.W.S. – Macarthur (1996)
Formed by ex-players from Macarthur Rams. Joined N.S.W.G.F.L. for 1996 season. Folded at the end of 1996 season. No links to U.W.S. Outlaws.
Vikings – Blacktown (1986 – 1988)
Joined N.S.W.G.F.L. for 1986 season. Folded at the end of 1988 season.
Warriors – Southern (1989)
Formed by ex-players from Army. Folded during 1989 season.
