The West Sydney Pirate are saddened to hear of the passing Phil Webb. Phil has been involved with gridiron in Australia since the 90’s and has had an impact on the sport and the people involved over that time.

Ian Taylor said: “It is with sadness that I heard of the recent passing of Phillip Webb.

Phillip was a great servant of the game, both in his capacity as an Official and a long-time member of the League Board, amongst his other roles.

Phillip and I didn’t always agree on things, especially when he was officiating games where I was coaching. But even when we disagreed, Phillip was always calm and a voice of reason. And later, when I’d reflect on the disagreements we may have had, 9 times out of 10 I’d have to admit to myself that Philip was correct in his decision and I was just being the “cranky coach”.

Phillip was always a gentleman and I’d like to think that we had our share of laughs along the way too.

The sport in this State is poorer for Phillip’s passing.”

David Ward said: “I have strong memories of Phil Webb from my start in the sport as a junior. His knowledge of the sport and approachability come to mind. Who will ever forgot the unique “no no no” call made by Phil after an incompletion. He will be missed by more than his friends and family. Thank you, Phil.”

The Pirates’ Women’s team take their first win in club history with a tough 20-14 victory over the Nepean Ducks at Kingswood.

We once again got off to a slow start, down 0-14. But, yet again, had a strong driving that simply ran out of time, going into half time.

The second half saw a new Pirate team, inspired by words from their head coach. Two touchdowns brought the score to 12-14. Then, like a movie script, the needed touchdown was scored with a 2 point conversion. 20-14 Pirates with 6 minutes left in the game. Defence held on to give the Pirates’ Women’s team their first win in club history.

We are so pleased to announce that long time head coach of our division 1 team, many times club president and backbone of the club, Ian Taylor, was inducted into the NSW Gridiron League Hall of Fame during the league’s presentation on 4th of December 2022.

The weather was perfect and the day ran smoothly with awards given out to all the high achievers for the 2022 season. It culminated in Hall of Fame announcements for John Boss and Ian Taylor with induction speeches given by their former and current players and assistant coaches.

Well deserved coach 👏

Championship Day. Leichhardt Oval and it was the Pirates taking on the Sydney University Lions. Kick off 5.00pm.
The 1st Quarter came to an end and the Pirates are dominating in every phase. The Pirates had the ball for only three plays in total! The Lions lead 7-0.
The Pirates are struggled to get into the game. Sydney Uni are dominating possession and controlling the clock.

The Lions scored early in the 2nd Quarter but hadn’t scored since. They were threatening every time though.

Lions lead at halftime 14-0.

The 3rd Quarter came to an end with no addition to the score. A dominant Sydney University team AND the clock were now the enemies.

Lions lead 14-0.
A Field Goal by the Lions was the only score in the Second Half.

Sydney University were too strong, too committed and too good on the day. Congratulations to them on yet another Championship in their storied history.

Sydney University Lions 17 defeated the Pirates 0.

The #1 ranked West Sydney Pirates team take on the #4 ranked Northern Sydney Rebels in Week 2 of the 2017 Playoffs.

Due for a 7.00pm kickoff but the start was been delayed due to earlier games going into Overtime.

The Rebels scored on the opening kickoff but failed to convert so led 6-0 at the end of the 1st Quarter. An interception taken by the Pirates from their own 5 yard line was returned the length of the field but the conversion was also missed.

Early in the 2nd Quarter and the scores are locked at 6-6. A tough 2nd Quarter with both teams scoring an unconverted TD. Scores were locked at the half 12-12. A scoreless 3rd Quarter. Scores were still locked at 12-12.

A David Ward to Mitch Hunt TD Pass in the 4th Quarter proved to be the difference.

The Pirates are in to the 2017 Waratah Bowl after defeating the Northern Sydney Rebels by 18-12.

The Sydney University Lions await.

The West Sydney Pirates Colts’ season has come to an end in Week 1 of the Playoffs. An undermanned Pirates team went down to the Central West Giants by 32-6.
Our thanks to Coaches James Forster, Chris Snagg, their Assistants, and all the players for their efforts this season.
2017 comes to a close but there are plenty of reasons to be positive about the future.

North Western Predators

Our Colts had a bye in the final week of the season but our Div 1 had a match up with an under strength and courageous North Western Predators team at Lidcombe Oval.
End of a quick 1st Quarter (it’s was a running clock) and the Pirates lead the Predators 7-0. Halftime at Lidcombe Oval, and to the accompaniment of jubilant Tongan Rugby League fans outside the ground, the Pirates lead the Predators 13-0. End of the 3rd Quarter and the clock is running. Pirates lead 20-0.

Final score Pirates 34 – Predators 0

Pirates finish the Regular Season undefeated and with the #1 seed into the Playoffs.

A big shout out to the North Western Predators who came into this game missing a large number of players. Other teams may have forfeited but not the Predators. They played with heart from start to finish. Thank you and well done.

A great result for the Pirates’ Colts in what was a must-win game. West Sydney Pirates 12 – Northern Sydney Rebels 6.

Cool conditions at Forestville where the Pirates Division 1 Team took on the Northern Sydney Rebels. The Pirates’ Defense was spending a lot of time on the field but the Pirates still held a 7-0 lead at the end of the 1st Quarter. At Halftime at Forestville and the Pirates lead the Rebels 15-6. A quick 3rd Quarter but the Pirates extended their lead. Score moved to Pirates 21 – Rebels 6.

An indifferent performance but it’s a win all the same. The score line was far too close but it’s still a win.
Pirates 21 defeated the Rebels 18.
Pirates now 9-0 and still #1.
